The offered PhD Elks Scholarship positions are part of an interdisciplinary research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation that aims to advance understanding of the global biogeochemical cycle of selenium. Selenium is an element that is naturally occurring in the environment and of key importance to human health. In the frame of this project two work programs have been defined that address important open questions concerning natural sources, emissions, speciation and fate of selenium in the environment. Each work program represents the topic of one doctoral thesis.

Your Elks Scholarship project will be part of the first work program, which targets to improve the understanding and quantification of biogenic production of methylated Se and S in the marine and terrestrial environment. Marine environments are presumed to be a major natural source of Se to the atmosphere. Also in terrestrial environments such as in peatbogs, selenium can be transformed into highly volatile methylated Se compounds that are emitted into the atmosphere. Nevertheless, the processes leading to formation of marine and terrestrial atmospheric selenium compounds are still largely unknown and need to be understood.

A key Elks Scholarship activity for the first stage of the project is the development of analytical methods for quantitative trapping and speciation studies of volatile Se and S compounds. Analytical techniques that will be used in these studies include HPLC-HG-AFS and (HPLC)-ICP-MS. A further task will be to apply these analytical methods in laboratory methylation studies with cultures of marine algae (in close collaboration with the department of Environmental Toxicology) and in a naturally selenium-enriched peatbog in Switzerland. This Elks Scholarship project provides a unique opportunity to acquire experience in different scientific disciplines and offers a diverse and stimulating working environment.

We are Elks Scholarship looking for a skilled and highly motivated person interested in challenging interdisciplinary research and enthousiastic about the development and application of analytical laboratory techniques. The successful candidate holds a master degree in environmental sciences, geosciences or chemistry and has a strong background in analytical chemistry. Fluency in English is mandatory and good knowledge of German is an additional asset. Ideally, the work begins in August 2011 but later starting dates can be discussed. The first two years of graduate program leading to Master's degree and analysis and writing a thesis. After these two years, students who demonstrate strong academic performance and a high research potential are the Ph.D. program, where they work on their thesis for his doctorate (PhD) is permitted in the economy.

To maintain close interaction between students and faculty, the department limits the registration of each year to a maximum of 25 students. Our students come from different countries, and the spirit of the program is truly international. Financial support in the form of teaching assistantships or research available.

PhD minority scholarships Mesoscopic simulation of biological and soft matter systems

The Department of Applied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has a scientific and technical staff of about 90 and 60 people, respectively, as well as 110 graduate and 375 undergraduate students. The research in the group Mesoscopic Transport Phenomena focuses on fluid dynamics at length scales ranging from 10 nm to 1 mm. It comprises both fundamental and application-inspired topics ranging from fluid physics at nano-scales to manufacturing processes of optoelectronic devices. Current and commencing projects concern dip- and die-coating of chemically patterned substrates, flows driven by temperature and concentration gradients, flows dominated by van der Waals forces as well as flows involving phase changes.

Project discription:

Biological cells such as red blood cells, but also vesicles, bubbles, or polymer particles often consist of a soft deformable membrane/interface and are filled with a viscous fluid. The properties of the surrounding solvent as well as the geometry of a confining vessel structure can strongly influence the behaviour of such particles. If the underlying processes are well understood, a vast number of applications including for example blood transport in microchannels or polymer deposition on complex surfaces appears.

Computer simulations are a valuable tool to contribute to our understanding and to assist in the development of applications, but an applicable simulation method requires a proper treatment of the membrane, the hydrodynamics of multiple fluid phases, as well as the electrostatic properties of the particles and solvent.

Requirements:

A 4 year PhD position is available within the group Mesoscopic Transport Phenomena, Department of Applied Physics, TU Eindhoven. The successful candidate will develop a simulation algorithm based on a combination of a lattice Boltzmann solver for the fluid flow, an immersed boundary approach for the membrane and a molecular dynamics solver for the particle transport and the particle-particle interactions. The project will require an efficient use of high performance computing ressources including Europe's largest supercomputers. A solid background in Statistical Physics and Fluid Dynamics as well as good programming skills are required.

Knowledge of Linux and high performance computing environments is pereferable, but not mandatory.

Employment Conditions:

The appointment is for four years. You will be an employee of the university with a competitive salary as well as excellent secondary benefits (holiday allowance, etc.). The research in this project must be concluded with the attainment of a PhD degree. A salary is offered starting at Euro 2042.- per month (gross) in the first year and increasing up to Euro 2612.- per month (gross) in the last year. The Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowship

Symantec plans to begin accepting applications for the 2011 Fellowship in July 2010. The application deadline is December 18, 2010. Award decisions will be made in February 2011.

Symantec will award Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowships to outstanding Ph.D. and M.S. students who meet the eligibility criteria listed below. A key goal of the program is to fund innovative research that has real-world value, in areas of Symantec’s business interests in information security, availability, and integrity.

Fellowship participants also gain first hand research and development experience through guidance and mentorship from a top scientist of Symantec Research Labs during the fellowship period. Each participant is also encouraged to spend a summer working with their mentor at Symantec on a research project in their area of interest.

Provisions of the Award

- In the US, the fellowship award will cover 100% of tuition and fees for the recipient’s graduate school in the US. A stipend is provided to cover living expenses while in school
- In Europe, a stipend is provided to cover research and living expenses while in school.
- Mentors from Symantec Research Labs are paired with award recipients. The mentor is a top researcher who can provide ongoing technical guidance on the recipient’s research, during their graduate training as well as during summer internships at Symantec.
- All recipients will be encouraged to take a salaried summer internship with Symantec Research Labs (Mountain View, CA, Culver City, CA, or Sophia Antipolis, France).

elks scholarship Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, Department of Medicine

TranSVIR is an FP7 EU funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) with four Academic Partners (MUW, University of Cambridge, Leiden University Medical Centre and Trinity College Dublin) and two Industry Partners (AstraZeneca, UK, and Hycult Biotech, The Netherlands). It will provide multidisciplinary research training in the basic immune and cell biological mechanisms responsible for vascular inflammation and repair together with the complementary skills required to translate this basic knowledge into the clinic. The present post is one of two to be based in the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research and supervised by Professor KGC Smith ( http://www.cimr.cam.ac.uk/investigators/smith/profile.php ). The person appointed will be trained in high throughput genomic and cellular immunological techniques together with complementary training in translational science both from an academic and an Industry perspective. The TranSVIR ITN is highly integrated and so the appointee will also have the opportunity to acquire additional skills through regular TranSVIR meetings and through attachments to other laboratories in the TranSVIR network.

The project, entitled "Predicting response in inflammatory vascular disease", is an extension of ongoing work in our laboratory that has recently led to the identification of a gene expression based biomarker that predicts outcome in two autoimmune diseases (McKinney et al Nature Medicine 16:586-91, 2010). The broad aim of this project will be to gain insight into the underlying genetic and epigenomic processes that direct this transcriptional programme and how ultimately this drives the disease process. In addition, the current biomarker will be further refined and optimised to develop an assay more suited for use in a clinical setting.

Funding

TranSVIR is funded under the Marie Curie Mobility Program designed to promote movement of researchers in Europe and so is open to citizens from any country in the world other than the UK provided they have not worked there for more than 12 months in the previous three years. However, UK citizens are also eligible if they have not worked in the UK for more than 12 months. TranSVIR pursues a policy of equal opportunities on matters of gender and disability and will seek to recruit an equal proportion of male and female applicants and will provide employment opportunities for candidates with disabilities. The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Foundation offers one or two scholarships each year for full-time post-graduate research in one of the allied health sciences. The award is for up to two years at an Australian tertiary institution with appropriate facilities for postgraduate research. The Foundation has a preference for applications from graduates in the disciplines of clinical psychology, nutrition, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech pathology but applications from graduates of other allied health disciplines pursuing a PhD in that field will also be considered.
Tenure
The scholarship will be open to persons who are working as full-time students in a research only PhD program which is likely to be completed during the two year tenure of the scholarship. The applicant will therefore generally have completed the first stage of the PhD project.
The successful applicant will be expected to take up the scholarship during the calendar year 2011.
Purpose
3.1 The purpose of the scholarship is to try to improve the health of Australians by supporting an outstanding applicant from one of the non-medical allied health disciplines, or from an applicant who is working directly in applied clinical research. Projects in laboratory sciences will not be supported.
Qualifications:
-The primary criterion is that of academic excellence, assessed on the basis of the candidate’s tertiary performance and publication record. Applicants should list the papers which they have authored and which have been published (or accepted for publication) in refereed journals. This should not include abstracts or papers in preparation.
- Ethics committee approval is a prior condition of award.
- The selection committee will also give preference to persons who are likely to make a contribution to the further development of the allied health sciences in Australia.
-Applicants must provide a specific research proposal, developed in consultation with the postgraduate supervisor at the institution where the award is tenable.
-Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students. The “full-time” criterion means that the applicant should spend not more than 10% of time in clinical practice – unless the clinical practice is providing the subjects for the research project.

AFUW QLD, the Queensland association of the Australian Federation of University Women, has been providing fellowships and scholarships for postgraduate research or study since 1972. AFUWQ is part of the International Federation of University Women.

A branch of AFUWQ, the Fellowship Fund Branch, Inc (FFI), was incorporated in 1983 to perform the management and administration of Fellowships.

FFI owns and manages the Academic Dress Hire Service (ADHS). It is a charitable organization and profits from its operations together with investment funds, provide Fellowships to women postgraduate students.
Our Fellowships have been awarded to women graduates from more than ten countries, and have supported studies in a wide range of disciplines, for example: marine biology, architecture, law, literature, radiography, mathematics, social work, archaeology, economics, molecular biology, management, music, information technology and performing arts.
Our aim is to assist women with tertiary qualifications to increase their knowledge and broaden their experience through studying or working in a different environment.

Graduates, on their Graduation day, are encouraged to contribute to the work of FFI by donating their refund cheque back to the organization for the provision of Fellowships.

Applications for postgraduate study in 2011 are currently being accepted. The closing date for this round of applications is the 31st May 2010.

Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award for Television 2010

The ABU, CASBAA and UNICEF are calling on Asia-Pacific broadcasters and producers for entries for the 2010 Child Rights Award.

The Award is given each year to the best television programme on children's rights produced in the Asia-Pacific region. It recognises the efforts of broadcasters in pursuing both the production of top quality children's programming and better coverage of children's issues.

Programmes both for children and about children are eligible and can cover any child rights' issue. Entries can include documentaries that detail the plight of children, dramas that help break down stereotypes and discrimination, or animation that teaches and entertains. Entries must have been broadcast between June 2009 and May 2010 and must be received by 25 June 2010. The award will be presented during the ABU General Assembly on 19 October 2010 in Tokyo. The winner will be flown to Tokyo for the ceremony.

The ABU CASBAA UNICEF Child Rights Award has proved to be a tremendous success since its inception in 2001, last year attracting more than 60 entries from over 10 countries.

6 alternative forms of College Financial Aid

College tuition fees have gone through the roof, as public support lost. It was beaten down to a very poor college savings accounts have. Place at the same time, extra work for students and older Americans, by the career of off-track jobs, willing to accept minimum wage jobs just to make some money dry.

College endowments are shrinking even further, making it harder for colleges to offer scholarships. Finally, private student loans that are difficult to be increased with a decrease of about 30 percent of the loans from banks and credit standards.

In response, our government has loan programs for students who speak of loans, more money and better prices, while increasing tax benefits for parents. A tuition credit extended to households with a maximum of $ 160,000 in adjusted gross income as possible to trim $ 2500 of your tax liability. However, the economic downturn means that many families have to think about how and what to give.

Here are five types of public and private college financial aid.

1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

It is the first step, fill out the FAFSA form (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/) universities generally require before awarding scholarships for merit-based grants and loans. The Ministry of Education has initiated the approval of the application by January 1 each year. Candidates can FAFSA be completed in the last few years a complete renewal FAFSA, but information on taxes and savings, for example, must be updated annually. The form contains many questions about the finances of the student and his family if the student is a dependent. The answers are in a formula that determines the remuneration and the family (EFC).
